Birding – one of the best destinations in the world

Sitting on BoatGuyana is a natural museum for the ecotourist, with approximately 275 waterfalls, 4 mountain ranges, 18 lakes and a vast region of untouched tropical rainforest. The rich flora and fauna, abundant wildlife and spectacular vegetation, provides one of the richest natural rain forest in South America.

More than 858 species of birds, belonging to 79 families, inhabit Guyana. A total of 144 waterbird species inhabit our rivers and lakes. Many bird species can be observed at the locations listed below. For example, the Blood-colored Woodpecker, the Festive Parrot, the Rufous-crab Hawk and Night Herons, are just a few of the species.

Guyana has been featured in many international publications including: Birdwatch, Waterlife, Condé Nast Traveller, Guardian Unlimited, and the Sundowner. Guyana has also been ranked alongside Peru, as the best destination in the world for birding.

Divided into three distinct areas: the Coastlands, the Rainforest and the Savannahs; each of the three natural regions offers its own diverse array of species. Several species can be seen in the capital city, Georgetown.

Georgetown has almost two hundred species of birds such as the Snail and Kite, as well as several species of Tanagers, Parrots and Hummingbirds.

Following is a list of some of the sites to tour:

Girls on BoatESSEQUIBO RIVER – Guyana ‘s main waterway, runs from the Atlantic to the Amazon dividing Guyana in half. The Essequibo River is the gateway to many of the most popular birdwatching and wildlife tours through some of the most pristine parts of the Amazon. Numerous wonderful lodges and resorts can be found along the river where the service is second to none and activities for the entire family are plentiful. Take a dawn boat ride on one of the river’s many small tributaries when you visit.

FORT ISLAND – Fort Island is rich in history. The island has the best preserved Dutch structures in the country and is a heaven for birding tours. The buildings were designed by Laurens Storm van’s Gravesande, who was Guyana’s longest serving Dutch Governor.

SAXACELLI BEACH – Saxacelli was originally an Arawak community on the bank of the Essequibo River; approximately 25 miles from Parika. Saxacelli has a beautiful beach and is an ideal area for camping and bird watching.

BARTICA – A small town of about 14,000 people on the Essequibo River; and a wonderful place for birding or to just escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

HURAKABRA RIVER RESORT – Hurakabra resort is a short yacht ride from Parika. The area has a cosy private beach and has many species of birds for viewing.

SHELL BEACH – Extends for about 90 miles along Guyana ‘s northwestern shore, in the areas between the Pomeroon and Waini Rivers . True to its name, this remarkable strand consists of a vast array of tiny shells, a composition that makes it an ideal nesting site for sea turtles. Four of the world’s eight sea turtle species come here each year between March and July to dig nests among the shells, lay as many as ten dozen eggs and return to the ocean.

Sunset with Boats

Calypso Yacht's primary focus is to provide the best service to our clients, whether birdwatchers, vacationers, or thrill seekers. Also, we are available for pleasure trips (Romantic gatherings, Birthdays, Corporate events, and other events) to the many resorts on the Essequibo and Demerara Rivers and along the Essequibo coast line.

What a great experience, we felt like we were in Florida or New York, traveling aboard a luxury yacht on the Hudson or the Inter-coastal Waterway. We’ll most definitely take Calypso again on our return trip to Guyana.end quote
